International transport between the EU and the United Kingdom
WARNING – From 1 January 2022, full customs controls will apply to all goods moving between the EU and Great Britain. Brief operational guidance.
In a specific information note issued a few days ago, the British Government recalled that as of 1 January 2022, the new customs rules affecting the traffic of goods between the European Union and the United Kingdom will be in force, fully implementing BREXIT.
Transport companies involved in goods traffic between the EU and Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), in order to continue with these traffic relations, without problems when crossing the borders, by ferry or shuttle, and within the framework of customs controls, have the obligation to register, as soon as possible and in advance, with the G.V.M.S.-Goods Vehicle Movement Service. This applies to all companies concerned, whether or not they are based in the UK.
Before registering with the G.V.M.S.-Goods Vehicle Movement Service, interested companies must apply for and obtain an Economic Operator Identification and Registration Number, this is the so-called EORI-GB number.

NEW CUSTOMS RULES WILL AFFECT YOU FROM 1 JANUARY 2022
If you move goods between the EU and Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), you must register for the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) now.
From 1 January 2022, full customs controls will apply to all goods moving between the EU and Great Britain. The GVMS system has been designed to enable fast and efficient movement of goods and will be used by many UK ports.From 1 January, if you’re not registered and attempt to move goods through a GVMS port, you won’t be able to:
- board the ferry or shuttle,
- cross the EU/GB border, and
- clear your goods through customs.

Who needs to register?
You need to register for GVMS if you’re a UK or non-UK based haulier. This includes if you’re:
- an independent driver transporting goods and doing your own customs paperwork
- a company that sub-contracts to pick up goods on behalf of another business
- a logistics business, hired to transport goods and complete customs processes on behalf of another business
- a large retail business, that transports and declares your own goods.
How to register
Before you register you need to get a:
- GB Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number
- Government Gateway Account.
